This month's subject: Dog stories!
The Dog Who Wouldn't Be: Another book my parents read out loud to my sister and I - "Mutt's pedigree was uncertain, but his madness was indisputable. He climbed tress and ladders, rode passenger in an open car wearing goggles and displaying hunting skills that bordered on sheer genius. He was a marvelous dog, worthy of an unusual boy growing up a raw, untamed wilderness." So funny and a very entertaining read for the family.101 Dalmations: The only real similarity to the movies or cartoon is the fact that there are at one time 101 dalmations. I absolutely loved this one (tale told from the dogs' points of view) and the sequel below, The Starlight Barking.

Lad, A Dog: I grew up with Collies so I have a special love for them. I think that Albert Payson Terhune recognized this special breed and it truly is revealed through his writing. This is a wonderful novel and so are any others you can find by the author.
The Trouble With Tuck: This is one of those books that I read and re-read as a kid - I was absolutely enthralled. A little girl's dog, Tuck, begins to go blind and her family starts to think about putting him down. The little girl insists that if people can have a seeing eye dog, then Tuck can have a seeing eye dog! Touching story.
Lassie Come Home: Another wonderful Collie book.Other fun dog books for small children:
Clifford the Big Red Dog (children's)
Carl's Adventures (children's)

Thanks for all the great book suggestions. :) I completely forgot about The Dog Who Wouldn't Be - I had that book as a child! Fun reading. :)
Great books! I love this idea! My favorite dog book as a child would have to be The Pokey Little Puppy & my boys love it now too!
Oh. My. Goodness! You should have written my post! You came up with so many books! =D THat's awesome!!! I have both 101 Dalmations AND Ginger Pye sitting on my shelf waiting to be read. After seeing all that you managed to put together, I'm eager to get to them.
I'm so glad you participated too! =)
Thanks!
I think our favourite Doggy-kinda'-book is "Harry and Lulu". It's so cute and it's one of the ones we've read so often the pages are getting, um, dog-eared! ;-)
