Should I Buy the Cheapest Baby Gear?

I know how tempting it can be to grab the least expensive item when you're baby shopping. Especially in the beginning, you need so much that it can all be overwhelming. I've been there, believe me. But I really cannot recommend buying the cheapest product after some of my experiences...

The Baby Gate:

We grabbed the one that was only ten bucks. I figured, "Why pay more for a baby gate? How different can they be from each other?" Plus it was wood - I like wood. In baby toys, anyway. Unfortunately, I discovered the hard way that the quality of the gates is VERY different. That one broke after about three weeks. Granted, we knocked it over a couple of times (it blocks our living room from our hallway and keeps Emma from opening doors and wandering into potentially dangerous places). Still, it should have lasted longer. Seriously, though? If it hadn't fallen apart, I may have been tempted to take a hammer to it. It was impossible to figure out how to set it up, and everytime it fell down or was lodged out of place, it took my husband (designated keeper of the baby gate) five to eight minutes to get it back in place. It was taped in place at one time, even.

Oh my goodness, I found it at Target.com. Study it. Do not buy it. lol I generally like The First Years brand, but this is not an item I recommend.

Our second gate (here it is, the same brand, lol) was $20.00, if I remember correctly - that's the one we still have. It is made of thick plastic and is doing the job.

I can get it back in place, but my husband is still keeper of the baby gates. ;-)

Ooh, here's the gate I would like to have - by The First Years again. Nice. I would take over the baby gate if I had this...

The Playpen:

The second product I bought that I regret is Emma's playpen/play yard. Something I take down and put back up up often. I can do it without too much of a hassle, but it took a bit of getting used to - there's a knack to it. I predict that that this one won't last long - definitely not long enough to be used with another baby.

What I mean is, no way will I be using it again with another baby, whether it still works or not. lol I can't remember what brand it is, and I just looked all over it and can't find a brand name, so that tells me that they must not be too proud of it. ;-) I think it's this one. One of the simplest, without any special add-ons. It does have some nice features - you can carry it easily with a handle when it's minimized (I guess I think in computer terms), it has wheels and can be moved easily (unless there's a baby in it...), and it has a pocket on the outside (which I've never used). The cons - it isn't quick and easy to put up and take down, and it is REALLY hard and uncomfortable. I put lots of blankets in when Emma needs to be in it for awhile. I wish I had looked for a better one.

What I'm Sayin':

Do a little research and buy gear that has decent reviews - buy it online if possible and look around for the best prices! It might be a good idea to walk through a nice store that carries baby gear already assembled and take a good look at each product.

Sometimes, the cheapest is the best! It really depends on the brand, whether there's a sale, and how often you'll use it. And your patience level. ;-)

I'm planning to do things differently with my next child, should there be another (I hope!).

Sorry, baby. It's true - firstborns are guinea pigs.

I should know, I'm a firstborn. ;-)

My Creative Endeavors...

This was a very enjoyable weekend for me when it comes to crafting, how about you? Emma was semi-sick (meaning yucky runny nose but no fever) and very high-maintenance, but at the end of the day when she went to bed (7:30 every night, yay for that!) I took out my watercolors, made myself some hot chocolate with a candy cane in it (hey, it's Christmas!), and started working on a new project...

A Recipe Scrapbook/Journal!

This is my first one, and I was initially inspired by this awesome site, Red Velvet Art. They don't have them anymore, but I came across a collage pregnancy journal they designed that I absolutely loved! It was simple and personal and oh-so-cute. I thought, "I could do that!" - and that's where the madness started. ;-) I proceeded to work on my recipe journal and had SO much fun with it. I know I'm going to be doing this often. It's a lot more rewarding for me to draw my own illustrations than to buy scrapbook notions and stickers... and much cheaper. :-)

Okay, so enough talk - here's what I've done so far:

What I really like about these is that they're not perfect, but that's okay!

How I Did It:

I had an empty scrapbook that was just waiting to be filled... some day. So I grabbed my scrapbook stash and started creating! It was really easy because all of the paper I have is already pre-cut to fit perfectly inside the clear envelopes in the bound book. You could use a binder, a journal, whatever you wanted to glue recipe cards, recipes from magazines, photos and pictures you like, etc into your recipe book. So yeah, easy peasy! And this would be fun for a young person to do with a regular journal, too. I'm thinking a prayer journal is going to be next.

Christmas Craft (and Ornament!) Tutorial Roundup

I'm overwhelmed by all the genius out there! I just have to share these amazing Christmas crafts that I'm just dying to make...

Disney from Ruffles and Stuff made this adorable cotton/felt Christmas tree complete with little ornaments for her daughter's room! It's a wall hanging, and oh so cute!

Now check out this monster foot stocking from Crap I've Made (not crap at all in my opinion!).

These cute little acorn mushroom ornaments from Lil Fish Studioes look so easy to make!

Family Fun has a tutorial on how to make a time capsule ornament! Wouldn't this be fun to do with your kids every year?

Here's a quick and easy chocolate mouse ornament even the smallest children can help with - you might want to eat them after Christmas, though. ;-)

I'm loving this paper tree centerpiece from Red Velvet Art Blog!

Motley Moms repurposes old Christmas cards into photo ornaments - what a great idea!

Aren't these little paper gift boxes cute? Find out how to make them at Create Studio!

Make a really delicious-looking gingerbread man (hee hee) - pattern can be found at the Elsie Marley blog. :-)

Small Fry and Co. (very worth following her wonderful blog!) has one of the best Christmas advent calendars I've seen - it's a tree with numbered ornament containers. Each day her little one gets to open and ornament and get a treat! I'm so doing this next year. I think it would be a wonderful tradition! I'm thinking about how I can add little treats that would be fun and keep the focus on what Christmas is really all about - Christ's birth. :-)

Next up: Christmas Printables! ♥

{Holiday Gift Giveaway #25} Gummy Lump (Rock and Trot Rocking Horse)

One of my favorite online toy stores, Gummy Lump, is back with a spectacular giveaway! Remember my review of the awesome Russian Building Blocks from Gummy Lump? I've had nothing but positive experiences with them and absolutely love their selection of toys. You can find puzzles, push/pull toys, doll houses, furniture, pretty much whatever your child is into, you can find there!

Other things I like about Gummy Lump:

  • Easy online shopping (filter by age, category, and brand)
  • Huge selection of high-quality toys
  • It's easy to find the clearance, specials, and toys under $10.00
  • They're very nice to work with and have great customer service
  • They carry all of my favorite brands like Melissa and Doug, Haba, and Radio Flyer
My Thoughts/Review:

Thanks to Gummy Lump, I was able to review the Melissa and Doug Rock and Trot Plush Rocking Horse.

Check out that expression on my little one's face! That kind of exuberance is the reward every parent wants to see when they give their children gifts. I am one happy mommy. :-)

When I was first checking around online for the best deal on a quality rocking horse I could find, I thought I wanted a wooden horse. I'm a huge fan of wooden toys and it seemed like a good idea at the time. But when we received this rocking horse, I knew that it was perfect. I love the plush softness of the horse, it's so much more realistic than a wooden one would have been - and much more comfortable for my toddler. She's also really into animals right now (she is a zhu-zhu pet addict) so the realistic look really appeals to her. The horse is well-proportioned and well-made, and has a really sweet face. I love the design.

Rock out!

I thought you might like to see Emma rocking - all by herself! She's 18 months and it's the perfect size for her.* I was really relieved to see that she could do it all on her own. She's also figured out how to rock across the room, which I thought was really funny. Watch this video:

*Note that this toy is recommended for ages 2 and up.

Sound Effects:

The Rock and Trot Rocking Horse is totally adorable and a great rocking horse, but that's not where the coolness ends - squeeze this horse's ear and you'll hear a clip-clop, clip-clop, clip-clop and a resounding neigh! It takes two AA batteries that are not included. The battery pack is safely tucked into the horse's abdomen (it requires a screwdriver to get to the batteries, so safe from tiny prying fingers) beneath a velcro closure. I appreciated that safety measure since Emma watched me curiously and wanted to know exactly what I was doing. Thankfully she can't get to the battery pack at all.

Conclusion:

I couldn't be happier with this toy and am so glad to be able to recommend such a great product to you all! There are no negatives to it that I can find at all!

Where to buy it - and discount code!

You can buy the Melissa and Doug Rock and Trot Rocking Horse from Gummy Lump for only $79.96 right now! It normally retails for $99.95, so this is a great deal - especially with free ground shipping! :-D Use the coupon code KS5Off to get free ground shipping and $5.00 off $100.00 or more!
